The project CIHEAM-Pesca Libano “Technical Assistance to the Ministry of Agriculture in the field of fishery development” provides the Lebanese Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) with advanced tools designed for a proper management of marine and fisheries resources. This is achieved by strengthening capabilities of the MoA staff and assessing the potentialities of marine coastal resources.
Tools need data and knowledge to work properly. For this reason, the project gathered scattered data directly or indirectly related to fisheries from different concerned institutions, on the one hand. On the other, it actively collected data that emerged to be important for a correct management of the sector and still missing. Data have been quality checked, harmonized and integrated into a central spatial database.
The project has been working on the land to map infrastructures and activities linked to fisheries, and at sea to assess the distribution and abundance of fisheries resources. We have been dedicated to assure and develop the identity of the project built on information sharing, collaboration, exchange of intents with different actors, and promotion of merging and melting of activities with different initiatives.
The project Pesca Libano is financed by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. CIHEAM-Istituto Agronomico Mediterraneo di Bari (IAMB) is in charge of executing the project activities. In consideration of the multi-disciplinary expertise demanded by the project, a continuous coordination support has been assured by IAMB in order to liaise with the partner involved in the action: Istituto Agronomico per l'Oltremare (IAO), the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Lebanon (MoA), and the National Council for Scientific Research, Lebanon (CNRS).
In these web pages we describe the main activities of the project and share the web-based tools built on the top of the open source software platform.
